Academic short biography

Tarmo Koppel has been a faculty member and researcher at Taltech Business School since 2009. His professional and academic background is in both business administration and information technology. Tarmo teaches and supervises students at all levels of education: doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s, but also conducts courses aimed at high school students. He defended his PhD in business administration at Taltech (2019). Later, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of South Carolina’s AI Institute in the field of virtual assistants and recommender systems (2021). He was also a special researcher at the Insight Institute at the Georgia State University School of Business, specializing in machine learning and advanced business analytics (2022).

Research topics

Tarmo praegused uurimisteemad hõlmavad AI rakendusi ärivaldkonnas, eriti virtuaalassistente, suuri keelemudeleid ja otsustugisüsteeme. Tarmo ja tema tudengid keskenduvad AI integreerimisele äriprotsessidesse, kombineerides generatiivset AI-d (suured keelemudelid) reeglipõhise AI-ga ning kasutades äriprotsesside juhtimise (BPM) mudeleid. Tema varasem töö on hõlmanud ka töötaja produktiivsust, nutikaid töökohti, andurvõrke, asjade internetti (IoT), tööohutust ning riskijuhtimist.

Courses

Tarmo’s teaching work includes the following courses: Digital Transformation; Digital Ecosystem; Software Technologies; Artificial Intelligence Tools for Optimizing Business Processes During Digital Transformation; Application of Artificial Intelligence in Economic Sectors; Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence. A typical course consists of a lecture and practical work every week. In the lecture, we first review the latest AI developments and discuss how it affects our business activities. Then, we get acquainted with a new concept and theory that allows us to understand how AI works in real life, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of this particular approach. In a practical exercise, we create and/or test an AI tool/method to automate a selected business process.

Supervising student thesis

The works supervised by Tarmo are mainly divided into the following keywords: Digital revolution, Chatbots, Predictive analytics, Decision support systems, AI business applications. The theses mostly examine the feasibility of an innovative solution in automating a business process. The feasibility is measured, for example, by the speed of work, costs, number of errors or user feedback (survey, interviews). Often, these studies conduct an intervention, i.e. the company’s employees or customers are asked to try a new way of doing things. Services for companies

We offer a comprehensive business process management service that includes process modeling, analysis, design, implementation and measurement. We conduct in-depth feasibility studies in the technical, performance, economic and legal areas. We also help improve processes, develop and configure technology and carry out change management, including pilot projects and staff training. The goal of the holistic approach is to increase company efficiency and reduce costs by providing innovative solutions and continuous process improvement.

Professional trainings

Tarmo also regularly conducts advanced training for non-university target groups, including employees of companies and public institutions, as well as interested individuals. The training formats are Lectures, practical workshops, training days and courses. Since 2022, the state has commissioned and funded four major AI-themed courses, which are intended to increase the knowledge and skills of Estonian companies and business professionals in this field (see more information in the news section below).

AI AND BUSINESS SOCIETY – An international association of AI researchers and developers focused on AI applications in business.

AI IN BUSINESS – Annual international scientific workshop organized at Taltech. Participation is free.

AI-ENABLED SYSTEMS – A seminar where students’ research papers will be presented. Participation is free.

AI4CE.ORG – AI for Credible Elections, a scientific project investigating the impact, challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in the elections context.
